(rcranfield)

As has been mentioned above, but to say in a different way. The Mayans had no concept of January, February, etc. They measured time by cycles of the sun, and planets. There is no change in the calculations of planetary alignment predicted (amazingly) by the Mayans. But we have artificially assigned our calendar to their predictions. So when Europeans assigned the date of alignment to the Mayan prediction, we came up with the date listed. So there is no missed armageddon.
But as was also said, the calendar did not predict an end of times. It simply ended at a major cycle of planetary alignment. It is kind of like running out of checks in the check book. The world won't end,,,,,,,,, OK, so maybe it will for some people.
Re:Doomsday all ready passed? (xanderf)

Apropos to nothing (because the whole "Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world" thing is rather a huge misunderstanding of their calendar - it's basically nothing more than a rollover date like our December 31 -> Jan 1 rolls over one year to the next)...

...that's not exactly a relevant argument, as the entire idea of 'leap years' is an artifact of the Gregorian calendar system. IE., there is nothing to 'account for' when looking at another calendar system, as they won't have that problem, or have the problem but deal with it in different ways. For example, the Hebrew calendar has an entire 'leap month' that shows up every now and then.
Re:Doomsday all ready passed?
