04/23/2009 5:59:50 PM 1C_David   Hi Everyone I'm David Tractenberg. I work for 1C Company, one of the largest publishers in the world. We ship about 20 titles a year to the US and ship one metric ton of product (software) every hour 24/7 365 around the world. Today I'm here to talk about our newest title, Cryostasis. This is our new FPS/survival title...
04/23/2009 6:01:01 PM 1C_David   Q : What are the minimum system requirements for CPU Ram and GPU A : Starts from nVidia 8800, 9800. Recommended is GTX260, on the graphics side
04/23/2009 6:01:51 PM 1C_David   As for a chip it should be capable of 88 miles per hour in a Delourean
04/23/2009 6:02:41 PM 1C_David   Q : Why is Cryostasis only $30.00 unlike other new titles? A : We are trying to bring some extra value to everyone. If you want to pay me more...well okay. ;)
04/23/2009 6:03:43 PM 1C_David   Q : What makes Cryostasis unique to its genre? A : wow, lots! Firstly is the mental echo feature which allows you t6o relive the last few minutes of the crew's life. This is used to propel the story and also to have some fun.
04/23/2009 6:05:02 PM 1C_David   The big answer though is our thermodynamics. Everything is about how warm or cold you are. Even your health is tied to the cold.
04/23/2009 6:05:57 PM 1C_David   Q : I did not see it mentioned on the official list is Cyrostasis a supported title for the NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision A : Yep. We even optimized it for the glasses by bringing out the snow. Our snow is created dynamically and uses real physics.
04/23/2009 6:06:32 PM 1C_David   So as you wander around the glasses really make you feel like you are in a blizzard when you are outside.
04/23/2009 6:07:38 PM 1C_David   Q : Does Cryostasis use secuROM DRM? are there a limited number of installations? A : No DRM whatsoever. We are tired of being forced to put in a system that stops pirates for about a day but stops users from having fun all the time.
04/23/2009 6:07:59 PM 1C_David   Q : will there be multi-core CPU support? A : Yep...speeds up the game dramatically.
04/23/2009 6:08:12 PM 1C_David   Q : How long have you been working on this game? A : 4 years...4 long years...4 very.....
04/23/2009 6:08:43 PM 1C_David   Q : How much better performance with this game can you see in Nvidia technology in Frame rates? Gtx 295 vs. 4870x2. A : Nvidia is quite frankly the only way to go on this game. We have more PhysX than any other game ever and so the Nvidia GPU is really needed.
04/23/2009 6:09:20 PM 1C_David   Q : What game engine does cryostasis run off of? A : this is our own engine, from the ground up....
04/23/2009 6:10:20 PM 1C_David   Q : Does this game have an advanced AI system? A : Very afvnaced. We worked on pathfinding as you would except, but more than that we had to use the environment due to the physics. This means we had to train the AI how to throw boxes, move items and even avoid heavily iced areas.
04/23/2009 6:11:11 PM 1C_David   Q : Will it support DX10 or just DX9? A : We love DX10. The game fully supports it and uses every feature we could get our hands on. You can play the game on DX9 but it's a little slow.....
04/23/2009 6:11:38 PM 1C_David   Q : Very excited and optimistic about your new game. Question: why is there no demo available for XP users? Or is there one and I am unaware of it. Thank you for joining us this evening. A : There will be one...can't say when, but close.
04/23/2009 6:12:01 PM 1C_David   Q : How long does the game take to complete (average)? A : I'd say 14 to 16 hours...a little longer than KillZone 2 from my oppinion.
04/23/2009 6:12:47 PM 1C_David   Q : Cryostasis uses PhysX technology. In this case, would the game get any performance if a video card is dedicated directly for PhysX? For example if a system has a 260 GTX for handling the render and a 9800GTX SC to handle the PhysX? If so, how big of an improvement? A : You will see a huge boost this way, great question. You just set one card to be a dedicated PhysX card and away you go.
04/23/2009 6:13:27 PM 1C_David   Actual numbers, I think you will see a 30%, but don't hold me to exact numbers without knowing your rig.
04/23/2009 6:14:52 PM 1C_David   Q : Yin~Yang: Does this title works with an SLI configuration? Good question, please email jacobf@evga.com for a free shirt. A : Yep. Again we love power and speed. SLI will imrpove your performance by about 40% depednign on configuration.
04/23/2009 6:16:12 PM 1C_David   Q : How was it received in Ukraine, Romania, Russia, etc?? A : We just won two awards so that says something. However our reviews are average and above, so some liked it but others loved it.
04/23/2009 6:16:57 PM 1C_David   Q : Does the game have any online multiplayer aspect? A : It does not. ;( No fragging people with ice. However it has a huge single player component with a great storyline.
04/23/2009 6:17:33 PM 1C_David   Q : Does the cold effect the operation of the players weapons? A : Sure does. If it gets too cold your sniper scope stops working, bolts jam more and water really measses you up.
04/23/2009 6:19:16 PM 1C_David   Q : I have noticed alot of developers have lacked ind the Dynamic Shadow/Lighting Dept. How has Cryostais been designed to give the user "Realism". Great question, Pistolkilla please email jacobf@evga.com for a free shirt. A : Yes it has. We are going for as realistic as we can get on an ice ship floating near the North Pole. Our lighting in particular is a big part as this game should make you jump a few times. Shadows are a huge part of this of course.
04/23/2009 6:19:43 PM 1C_David   along with that the lighting is used as a heat source so it plays a part in the gameplay beyond looks.
04/23/2009 6:20:41 PM 1C_David   Q : When U create a new Engine do U try to pimp it to all other dev out there or do just keep it to your self's ? A : We just keep it to ourselves...selfish huh? Why sell off our best tech? ;)
04/23/2009 6:21:56 PM 1C_David   Q : Were environmental sound effects an important aspect in the designing Cryostasis? A : Everything has sound, we need to scare people and thyat means sound! Creaking ship parts, even ice makes sounds
04/23/2009 6:23:04 PM 1C_David   Q : Where did you guys get the idea for the cool crazy arctic story line? A : Russia loves it's ships and these were the coolest. the Artica class ships are real, there are still several plowing through the snow. They actually use the heat from the Nuclear reactor to break the ice! How could we not use that as a setting in a game?
04/23/2009 6:24:01 PM 1C_David   Q : Can I see all of the new effects if I don't have a PhysX enabled graphics card? A : If you like oil paintings you sure can! I would just go out an buy an Nvidia GPU card like a good 285, but I like running games at full speed.
04/23/2009 6:24:52 PM 1C_David   Q : Can you tell us about the real-time Nvidia water physics used by the game engine? Great question Fo0b4er, please email jacobf@evga.com for a free shirt. A : The water effects are one of the things we spent the most time on.
04/23/2009 6:25:45 PM 1C_David   The water is a part of the story as we are on a frozen ship. This means it needed our attention. Water on the walls starts with ice, melts to slush and runs the wall eventually.
04/23/2009 6:26:19 PM 1C_David   We have real fluid and hydrodynamics working in the PhysX.
04/23/2009 6:27:28 PM 1C_David   Q : Why did you choose to buld your own engine rather then use a different engine? A : Othe engines are very expensive for one. Most are between 650 and 1 million. Why buy theirs when they don't even have water as good as ours? It didn't mkake sense.
04/23/2009 6:27:40 PM 1C_David   Q : What level of AA or Anisotropic Filtering will Cryostasis support? A : We fully support both.
04/23/2009 6:28:26 PM 1C_David   Q : Does the game use iron sights? A : Definately. We use true to life guns in all cases except for the few we made up, like the water cannon.
04/23/2009 6:30:44 PM 1C_David   Q : Mental Echo - the ability to penetrate another character's memory and change the actions in the past is built into this game, how much does this type of game style add to the suspense of the story line? Good question, Blazen22 please email jacobf@evga.com for a free tshirt. A : Great question, this all about the story. you also use the ability to solve puzzles in the game. My favorite though is touching the side of beef and reliving the last few moments of the cow's life!
04/23/2009 6:30:53 PM 1C_David   Q : When is the release date for Cryostasis?! A : Monday! Yay.
04/23/2009 6:32:08 PM 1C_David   Q : are there random weather effects or are the weather conditions pre-programmed? A : There is only type of weather in the Artic Circle, cold and snowing. There was a sunny day once...I think it was back in 1974...
04/23/2009 6:33:11 PM 1C_David   Q : do you think that Cryostasis will replace Crysis as the most demanding game and be used as a benchmark? A : When using PhysX it should.
04/23/2009 6:33:47 PM 1C_David   Q : clamatowas IS there a night and a day? If so is it more dangerous to venture out side at the night due to colder weather? A : The Artic Cirlce has no day and night cycles in real life. Sorry.
04/23/2009 6:34:08 PM 1C_David   Q : are enemies more attracted to you the "hotter" you are? A : Yes. Every adult film star who has played this game was mauled by ice zombies.
04/23/2009 6:34:52 PM 1C_David   Wait...sorry, you asked a serious question. They actually want you to join them no matter what so they will attack you no matter what
04/23/2009 6:35:59 PM 1C_David   Q : is there any weapon that can be used to heat things up (ex: a flamethrower)? A : Yes, and ice things over. We did both to add some different elements. Think of it like The Thing or Alien, you make some of your own weapons and those are the ones that are more fun.
04/23/2009 6:36:52 PM 1C_David   Q : Is this game really scary? Should I get prepared like for a horror film? A : there are some very scary moments. I hope!
04/23/2009 6:38:04 PM 1C_David   Q : As part of your background research, did any of the developers or others involved with the game development spend any time on an actual ice breaker ship? A : We did. One of our modelers went and saw the real thing and tooks lots of pictures. I wish I had gone...these things are really sweet.
04/23/2009 6:38:58 PM 1C_David   Q : why did you limit the guns to only WW2 vintage when the game is set more modern? A : The ship only carried older weapons in real life, part of that though is the ship was frozen a long time before we get there. Part of it is also the AK in the game has been around forever.
04/23/2009 6:39:47 PM 1C_David   Q : When water freezes, can the expanding force move and break objects? A : Great question, but the answer is that there is nothing for it to break. In most cases you are warming the ship so it rarely refreezes. More than that though the expanding ice has already broken things....
04/23/2009 6:40:48 PM 1C_David   Q : Can you explain how this going back in time thing works? A : You basically touch the body of a dead crewman (or side of beef) and then you are transported to their last few mintes of life. you then need to stop whatever killed them the first time from happening.
04/23/2009 6:41:04 PM 1C_David   Q : David, what is the background story on this game? What is our plot? A : Cryostasis brings gamers to the Arctic Circle, Russian North Pole station "Pole 21" in 1981. They take on the role of Alexander Nesterov, a meteorologist caught inside the North Wind, an old nuclear ice-breaker, frozen in the ice many years ago. This steel beast once fought for its country, but it fell into an ice trap as did every living thing onboard. Alex will fight the cold and what lives within as he tries to find out what happened. Cryostasis is a drama about a ship and her crew evolving in an atmosphere of ice and animal fear.
04/23/2009 6:41:28 PM 1C_David   Q : is the story line action dependent upon the character, IE if we elct to not do something will it affect the final outcome? A : the final outcome is always the same, sorry but it's part of the plot.
04/23/2009 6:43:08 PM 1C_David   Q : IGN seemed critical of your game, any comments on the review or is it one were it appeals to the diffrent people diffrently A : IGN took the approach of looking at the Uk version which is not the US version. The US version even has a new weapon, the water canon that ysed ice as ammo.
04/23/2009 6:44:17 PM 1C_David   Q : CabooseKid does the enviroment your in affect the rate of your freezing.. IE you chill faster in water than air? A : Great question and yes it certainly does. Step outside and you will freeze faster. The ambient temp will force your core body temp down.
04/23/2009 6:45:05 PM 1C_David   Q : What exactly am I going to be shooting at while playing this game? Did I hear you say ice zombies?! A : You are killing the crew and other animals from the ship that were trapped in the ice.
04/23/2009 6:45:42 PM 1C_David   Q : Will the player be able to use objects around them as weapons? A : The first weapon is a chain and lock you find, after that a pipe and other weapons you litterally rip from the wall.
04/23/2009 6:46:17 PM 1C_David   Q : How will you keep the gameplay from becoming repetitive? A : Lots of different envioronemtns, different monsters, and a great plot. PC Gamer did call us the Russian Bioshock.
04/23/2009 6:47:34 PM 1C_David   Q : RiChess Can the player upgrade their clothing to become more weather resistant as the game plays out? Good question, email JacobF@evga.com for a free shirt A : Nope sorry. It's a great idea I will suggest to the devs for sequel. Right ow what you wear in is pretty good stuff and you can't get better.
04/23/2009 6:48:12 PM 1C_David   Q : Are the differences between the US and UK version large? A : Very! The UK version does not have all the PhysX stuff in it, is missing a new weapon and a few dmall items. They will get it all in a patch though.
04/23/2009 6:48:49 PM 1C_David   Q : Would you encounter inconsistent timelines if you encounter someone you've gruesomely killed and try to mental echo them? A : I like the temporal mechanics questions. However you do mental echo someone you killed, but it's to keep them from becoming an ice monster in the first place.
04/23/2009 6:49:22 PM 1C_David   Q : CabooseKid are there any "bosses" or does the game revolve more around the puzzle of what killed the ship A : We have some bosses, like the Tank. This guy has two flashlights and two submachine guns strapped to him and bolted into his head.
04/23/2009 6:49:32 PM 1C_David   Q : fo0b4er Is there an active forum for users to discuss the game? A : yep, on the website.
04/23/2009 6:49:44 PM EVGAWeb_ShaneD   The website is linked from the lobby
04/23/2009 6:49:55 PM 1C_David   Q : Does any of the story leave the ship? Or are you always inside the ship? A : You actually go under the ship;, outside the ship and at one point through the ships atominc core.
04/23/2009 6:50:59 PM 1C_David   Q : Tell us more about the "Theymodynamics" system A : this is the main component of the game, everything revolves around it. For instance your health is all about how cold you are. You get hit with items designed to make you colder so you will end up joining the crew.
04/23/2009 6:51:45 PM 1C_David   Q : From the trailer is looked as though the game was mostly melee. Is this true and will the combat style be like Condemned, where you pick up different melee items and occasionally find a firearm? A : No, there are lots of firearms. I like the machine gun but the Russian devs tell me that I take it too easy. They like the bolt action rifle as it takes a moment to reload and that gets tense.
04/23/2009 6:52:10 PM 1C_David   Q : fo0b4er Are there any weird/wacky/wonderful weapons we get to use in the game? A : My favorite is the new water cannon, using ice as ammo is great and it freezes your opponent in place.
04/23/2009 6:52:26 PM 1C_David   Q : Are you going to be continuously supporting this game with feature updates and bug patches? A : Yes!
04/23/2009 6:53:06 PM 1C_David   Q : playeraz3 will you be alone in the game or will you have friends to go along with you? A : All alone, play it in a dark room...with the air conditioner on.
04/23/2009 6:54:51 PM 1C_David   Q : After seeing screenshots of the game, I'm very impressed with the mood of the environments and the overall graphics used. It appears quite different than other games. What was the graphical influence for the creative design of Cryostasis? A : the mood comes froma variety of cources. Russians tend to make dark games to begin with, look at at Stalker. then add in a game where the crew is dead about a ghoist ship and you get the idea this is not a happy place. you are exploring these men's deaths and why this monolith of a ship has turned against them.
04/23/2009 6:55:42 PM EVGATech_JacobF   Thanks everyone for the great questions and answers!
