*Club i7 Stability Continuation* - Friday, November 06, 2009 7:05 AM ( #1 )
This is a club for the EVGA community for those of us who love and enjoy to OC our core i7 CPUs. It is for those who wish to post their results and build our comminity to help others if need be in reaching a goal they wish to achieve with their rig. 

In order to join Club i7 Stability , you must post ONE screenshot containing the following: 

1. At least 20 runs of Linx passed with no errors, using a problem size no less than 25,000 
(This will require your system to have around 4.8 GB of free memory, which should not be a problem for the majority of core i7 users. Allowing Linx to load and then unload seems to free up some additional memory.) 

LinX 0.6.3 IS A REQUIREMENT! 

LinX 0.6.4 can be downloaded from this site and I will keep it updated to the newest version for future people to see and use.

2. CPUz front tab showing your overclock, voltage, and threads. 

3. Real Temp showing your min/max temperatures before and during linx. 

4. Include a notepad shot with the screenie having your EVGA username DO NOT DO IT SEPARATELY...include it with everything else for ONE screen shot. Example: 

 


It eliminates the chances of accusation of the results being fake or not theirs 



5. HT is your preference, but the stats will be divided into two sections. HT on and HT off 

6. The i7 MUST be OC'd to 4.0Ghz or above. (Those of you who have 3.8,3.9 etc...I encourage you to reach the goal of 4.0 and enjoy the process of getting yourself there.)

Update for you Grd.

I have other things I should have been doing.  But I decided to screw it and take some "me time".  I did the thermal paste swap on the NB and Vreg.  Vreg was VERY fiddly to get it right.  I took the thermal pads off the Vreg and then applied thermal paste.  I mounted the vreg and removed it and saw that I had zero contact in the middle and light contact at the edges.  I filed down the vreg mount standoffs to increase edge contact and bent the middle downward and remounted.  I repeated this process over and over until contact was excellent.

Now, my idle Vreg temps are ~50c and loaded vreg temps are ~60c at 3.73GHz.  That is AMAZING!  My loaded Vreg temps at 3.73Ghz before were around 75c.

So, later on when I have more time, I will try 4.0 again.  There should be no reason I shouldn't do it with HT on now.

My Tvreg seems always too high. I think there are other thermal thermal things going on, or other performance issues which are just not CPU related.  [hunch no. 1638]
 
[edit] I sit and look at high Tvreg, I read what ty_ger07 and others write about fixing it, and so ah maybe eh possibly I'll get to it someday. The real issue is, of course, EVGA reads all these many, many, many reports of Tvreg problems on the 758 and they do absolutely nothing about it. Ford or GM would be forced to do a recall. My loaded Tvreg is way over 80c.

Hotmail, or Live, or whatever the heck it's called lets me use full resolution, full size shots, but I don't know how much total storage they're going to let me have.

Yes, 2:10 ratio equals 1600MHz memory at 160MHz Bclock.  If Bclock was 133, it would be 1333MHz, but since Bclock is 160, memory speed equals 1,600MHz.

I will try it.  I was under the understanding that BSOD 124 was an indication that VTT was too low.  I have had a lot of 124 BSODs and therefore I have been hiking the VTT up from +100.  Maybe I am wrong.  Maybe I will try lowering VTT when I see 124 error and raise core voltage instead.  :S.  Any suggestions there?

Now my issue is core temperature again.  Core temperatures hit 89c and RealTemp shut down the system at that temperature since I set it to automatically do it.  Maybe I will re-work it with very low VTT and hike core voltage slowly instead.  What do you think about my QPI PLL and IOH voltage?

Yes bsod 124 points to vtt or vcore also can be memory or a driver or even a video card or even something else. Have you tried your overclocking with only 1 video card installed? The Corsair H50 is a nice cooler but I am wondering if it can handle the heat a I7 ocerclocked to 4000+ Mhz puts out. QPI PLL voltage I increase mine but I do not really know if it helps anything, maybe when you start surpassing that 4000Mhz poit of QPI link. IOH voltage which I think is northbridge doesn't seem do anything (though I do increase it) unless you are overclocking your high end video cards a lot. But if north bridge gets too hot things will stop working. I have had 2 758 boards (still using 1) and both had very high N/B and vreg temps until redoing both N/B and vreg heat syncs.  But you are right I think temps are the problem. I have read on the evga forums people saying vtt effects thier temps more than vcore. Vtt is for uncore I think, so if that stays set and unchanged increasing multi would only need vcore increase, which still leads us back to heat. I hate heat! I'm trying.

I am done.  Forget it.  It isn't worth it.  I just have a crappy chip.
 
I can do 160x24 no problem.  I can do 133.6x29 no problem.  Going either method above 3.9GHz requires a HUGE core voltage increase which I still haven't found the end of.  No amount of voltage tweaking has uncovered the cure.  I am sick of this.  I give up.
 
I lowered memory speed and timings WAY down.  I lowered QPI link speed way down.  I lowered VTT voltage way down and worked with core voltage instead.  I tried everything and combinations of everything.
 
The chip just won't do 4GHz with HT on without an insane heat load.  It is apparent by my voltages that the chip is peaking out.  There is no reason I should keep forcing it.  If I want to go 4Ghz and higher with HT on, I should just buy a new CPU.

  You are probably right, That sucks. I have used a lot of socket 1366 chips, The w3500 series for some reason run a lot cooler, not necessarily better over clockers,  heck I had 2 3520's that really sucked but they ran cooler.

Yeah I noticed the same thing. For me it doesn't matter if VT is on or off (in BIOS). I always turned it off before this thread was started. Now it just one less thing to worry about...

Ty_Ger, that being the case, grab a 920 DO from Microcenter for$200, cheapest place I've found. I don't know your coolijng system but I can recomend the Megahalem with 1 or 2 of these fans on it depending on your MOBO layout. Scythe SY1225SL12SH 120mm "Slipstream" Case Fan - Retail

The Mega, that fan and a veryTHIN coat of OCZ Freeze to ONE surface, and I promise you a temp drop of 6-7C, maybe more. That's been my experience.

I had a C0/C1 and a CM V8 and I was going crazy trying to pass 4GHz The best I got was 3.8GHz. Chip change HSF change and TIM change (previosly sold on AS5 and Zalman super thermal grease) My experience with the OCZ  freeze has ended in a love affair. I tried it on a suggestion and I won't use anything else now.

I have felt your pain before and feel your's my be worse than my since you have the top of the line chip. I think if you come down and slum with me we can get your 4GHz and then some.

The Mega, that fan and a veryTHIN coat of OCZ Freeze to ONE surface, and I promise you a temp drop of 6-7C, maybe more. That's been my experience.

I had a C0/C1 and a CM V8 and I was going crazy trying to pass 4GHz The best I got was 3.8GHz. Chip change HSF change and TIM change (previosly sold on AS5 and Zalman super thermal grease) My experience with the OCZ  freeze has ended in a love affair. I tried it on a suggestion and I won't use anything else now.

I have felt your pain before and feel your's my be worse than my since you have the top of the line chip. I think if you come down and slum with me we can get your 4GHz and then some.

I have the money to purchase the chip, but not the desire at this point.  I don't NEED to upgrade my chip and can't justify upgrading it for the sake of spending money and a higher OC.

My multiplier is set in the BIOS to 20 and E-LEET shows x21?  Did I miss something?  Not that this is bad per se, but I want to be a bit more stable... and I like round numbers.

You have Turbo enabled.  Enabling Turbo should result in lower required voltages, not higher....at least for me.  YMMV.

Turbo gives you the +1. Most people have better luck with the odd multipliers
