this will keep the HD audio drivers from 197 installed (and test an idea of mine ....)

Apparently the black screen and login issues do not occur in Release 197 drivers, which include a HD Audio driver.

Also, it seem it takes a clean install of windows, and not installing the HD Audio drivers bundled with the NVDR 260, EVER, to get the card working nicely.

i wonder if the 197 HD Audio driver (1.0.9.1) would work better than the 260 (1.1.9.0)

I'll give it a try with the 197.xx driver series. On a clean windows 7 installation the nvidia hd audio driver was never installed at all and even the device's were deactivated and it still froze randomly (with 258.xx and 260.xx). Like i said above, i tested 3 evga gtx 470's now and all have the same problem (they also have the same bios i don't know if evga has different bios versions for these cards).

Other suggestions i found on the internet:

set the ram timings and voltage manually (set voltage higher if all slots are populated)
set the pcie bus frequency manually to 100 mhz
set the northbridge voltage a tad higher

Even if all these adjustments help to prevent gtx 400 cards from freezing a user shouldn't have to go through all this.
Fact is any not-nvidia-400 series card does just work. I had no problems for 5 days until this morning when my pc black screened again a minute after windows login. Maybe the cards are sometimes in a bad mood lol its always like that for me, freeze 2-3 times a day, then 4-5 days fine, freeze again, and another 4-5 days fine with no problems. Hardware is either defect or not but this is getting ridiculous. I'm waiting for nvidias response as their technical support guy said he will try to reproduce the problem.

hmm, can you post photo's of your bios configuration as well.
maybe something will jump out at me, or someone else that could be a possible cause.

as to the bios idea, i know sometimes a cpu can hardlock if voltage does not increment properly along with the clock state, so its possible the gpu may as well, could also be a driving timing in the driver.

I have seen on atleast 1 forum,  that the installation of the Nvidia HD audio driver corrupted the installation of a users onboard sound.

Everything is left at AUTO/Default in the BIOS. The timings look correct as far i can say:

Nvidia's HD Audio Driver did indeed corrupt my Realtek Audio, i had to remove and re-install it. I also had a Creative X-Fi Titanium PCIe card installed and disabled the Realtek Onboard but its the same problem.

well, i was more interested in specific settings, its been awhile since i saw what settings AMD chips had exposed to them.

AMD doesn't really do well at 1T Command rate when running PC-6400 at full speed for instance, but i can see thats set properly.

tbh, i really believe its something in the system driver.

all these issues started showing up with the Release 256 drivers, with nearly nothing similar on the Release 197.75 drivers

agreed.  my 470 has been rock solid stable until 256.

It's definetly the driver, because as soon as I uninstall them or boot into safe mode, my computer works fine.

billy, please understand that until drivers are installed,  your graphics card is running as a basic vga device.

                          Well thats why it works.

I dont get welcome screen freezes when the drivers are not installed. As soon as I install them I get the freezes. Uninstall them and I can get to the desktop no problem. It looks horrible and I can't play any games, but I can at least access the desktop.

thats because theres no acceleration, no acceleration means the gfx card is barely being used.

I have small, but weird problem with some thin white lines that appear for less then a second after Windows 7 logo ends.

Everything else is fine.. and works good.

What seems to be the deal with those lines ? They came with my new graphic card installtion ( gtx460 ).

                              I tried:
                              - formating whole system,
                              - installing new / old / beta nvidia drivers
                              - updating bios,
                              - checking with another monitor

.. and lines are still there...

Thats really not a big deal , but i`m afraid it could mean that something is wrong ( maybe graphic card ? ) ..

                              Any solutions ? ...

Just wanted to let people know that I did not have to disable my hd audio after I installed the new 260 whql driver. It was still disabled from before. So for people asking do you have to repeat the procedure, at least for me answer is no. Of course some may have to repeat it, I just didn't it. Everyones system is different and different results can and will happen.

i don't have any issues with it installed but would uninstalling these hd audio drivers fix my vice versa gpu1/gpu2 assignment problem?

I ran into an issue with the hd audio. I lost my sound. I went into MoH and could no longer hear sound. Upon existing game, resolution went to 800x600. I restarted system. Manually changed resolution. I enabled hd controller that was related to my video card. It got dectected. I put my headset on and still no sound. So I went into Windows sound and noticed my headset was not the primairy. So I set it back to primairy in playback and recording. It appears I had to enable the controller to let it detect the driver since that was what the system wanted to do. So I assume you have to enable the hd controller before you install a new driver. At least that's what my system wanted to do, otherwise I couldn't get my sound to work. Maybe if I had checked the windows sound first, I could have avoided re-enabling the hd controller but I am not sure. I just let the system do what it wanted then I reset my settings for sound from there. People will likely just have to try and see what works for them.

Tried everything in this thread and it still crashes whilst starting, closing and changing the graphics settings in games. The only thing I have not tried is reinstalling Windows and always choose not to install the audio drivers. Is there anything else to try as I have had this problem since I got my card and that was about 2-3 months ago.

Hey I had the same problem and none of the suggestions really worked. 30-40 times rebooting just hoping to load windows so I could try another solution. This is what I did to solve the problem I was having with my 460 after trying everything else. Downloaded DLPFix64.zip from the Nvidia forums:

                                        http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=88391

It is the 4th post down the page.

Unzipped the file, ran it and chose disable digital audio over HDMI. It may not have been offered for the same problem I had but I can tell you I now boot into windows every time.

I still need to check to see if my sound still work or if I need to install the drivers again. No guarantee but at least I can now boot into my system again. Give it a try if you are like me and nothing else worked. You can always revert.

no and i have 2 470 cards, both do it sometimes. one was send in for rma and i got it back cause no problems in the retailers test system (tested for 20 mins). maybe i should buy another motherboard and cpu + ram, i thought nvidia cards would work good with nvidia chipset boards but apparently not. If i get the money ill buy an evga intel board and i7 cpu maybe the cards work then :)

Now I'm scared. I just bought a GTX 460 today and 4 hours after I caved in and bought it I find this thread talking about freezing & sound issues with the 400 series. Hope I don't get any of the issues with my computer. If I do get the errors then I'll return it and hold out to get the 6000 series from ATI

This "claim" is incorrect.  Following this procedure, I get video crash -  i.e. black screen 'death' (BS) although the cpu, hard drives etc keep running -  even trying to update my computer's performance score in Windows 7 Home 64-bit !  There are a number of other applications that cause the 'black screen' death, may be also sometimes at random happening.  I have tried the procedure with "clean install" in Safe Mode applying first Driver Sweeper  with 258.59, 260.89 and now 260.99 drivers.

My system: Intel Quadcore 9300, ASUS P5E motherboard,  4 GB Kingston DDR2 RAM @1066, Adaptec 2120S SCSI controller and 4 scsi drives, a recent Corsair HX620 Power Supply, Hitachi CM769ET 19" Monitor, and EVGA GTX 460 model 1370 Bios 70.04.13.00.76 .

The BS is happening sometimes by software triggered interrupt conflict, but could be also hardware related interrupt conflict.  Strangely, I checked the ASUS forum on GTX 460-470-480.  But this problem has not been mentioned by anyone.

My present hunch is that it is specific for the EVGA nVidia 460 card, and it is possible that it is a hardware fault.   I will be contacting EVGA for support also after trying a number of checks why no one in others forum have struck this.

this proceedure should not cause any type of crash.
please try reinstalling your drivers (clean install 260.99) and the only follow the first part of the proceedure (steps 1-4) to shut down the hd audio device.

Didn't work, looks like I will have to format just to get my graphics card which I purchased expecting that it would work and not require me to have to format and reinstall windows, unless someone else has anything to try an I do mean anything as I really cba to format and reinstall.

Sorry to hear it did not work. Truth is maybe one of the 7 other things I tried suddenly decided to work. I am now afraid to reboot unless absolutely necessary.
