argh gonna spend some major money Saturday, May 12, 2012 3:11 PM (permalink)
i be slowly upgrading in the next 2 months, i will roughly spend 3k on a z77 build, but im thinking that the 1155 sockets are on its last leg, should i say f it and get a x79 build, will the x79 ftw fit in my cm haf x 922? are the screw holes the same? it looks like i have another inch to the right of my mobo for more space. how does the noctua nh-d14 fit with this mobo? i research well into z77 but not much into x79, whats the word on the 3.0 pci-e on this board (ivy 2011)??

X79 for sure - In particular if you live near a micro enter - 3820 for $220

I have no experience with the HAF 922 and cannot comment on how the board will fit. The x79 would be a good choice if you plan to run more than two graphics cards or if you need a hex-core processor. The Z77 processors have 16-lanes available and the X79 processors have 40-lanes available. The latter would be good if you plan to run three graphics cards. PCI-E 3.0 does work with the FTW board with existing SB-E processors. There were a few PCI-E 3.0 options in UEFI BIOS I had to enable in order for GPUZ to show the correct setup. Eventually we will see Ivy Bridge for socket 2011 but that may not be until next year. Overall, I think you will have more CPU and GPU upgrade options down the road if you go with socket 2011.

Regarding NH-D14, there is plenty of space around the socket with the FTW so I suspect the heatsink will fit. Perhaps someone else here has that heatsink and can comment further.

z77 is just a slightly less doodoo version of z68. It's still not even close to x79. There really is no comparison and if you're looking to future proof your system then I really don't see any other option.  As for the size of that board in your case I can't comment. I don't use either. Sorry.

the only difference between the 2 boards is the x79 is 3/4" wider than my z68sli, thats like the width of my index finger, if the screw holes are the same i think im good to go.

After puting the Images of the MB's on top of each other it look's like the holes will line up. The X79 FTW board is the one I'm looking to upgrade to soon one day this lifetime.

It should fit, just be a little tighter. I ended up getting a different case anyways for my X79 build I'm in the process of acquiring since I'm selling most of my stuff to my roommate.  My only concern is all these BIOS issues and wondering if I should go with a different brand this time.
