Guild Wars 2 Performance Monday, April 30, 2012 6:46 AM (permalink)
Hey all,

Did anyone else play the beta this weekend and have awful performance??

I didn't really get too fair into the beta as pretty much every starter zone I was getting a max of around 40 FPS with the game maxed out ( I feel Tera is much more graphically demanding and I get 60 FPS constant with that game ). Even lowering the settings didn't do that much for the FPS. Some areas with a lot going on I saw a dip into the high teens.....that's terrible.
Core i7 2600k
Antec Khuler 920
GTX 580SC x2 in SLI (stock clocks)
Coolermaster HAF X case with GPU cooling shroud (120mm fan)
Soundblaster Fatality X-Fi Titanium
EVGA FTW Z68
WD 500 gig HD
Corsair AX1200 PSU
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Samsung 1080p 23" LED monitor

Key word here is that it's still in beta so the game is probably close to finished in terms of story and gameplay but they are working on improving performance. Also, the beta doesnt support SLI, not sure if the final game will at launch.

They said the BETA was CPU depended and also stuck on DX9.

      Final will be better

        You said the keyword: Beta.

yeah, but most betas aren't even really beta's anymore, just a way to market the game.

            /\ This sadly.

However, even with GW1, the game changed a bit from beta to launch.

^This.   ANet said this past weekends beta was for mass testing of CPU bound performance.  No matter what GPU you had it made no difference.  Hopefully for the next beta weekend they'll turn GPU back on so we can see the real performance, but its almost a certainty that anyone with a 570, 580 or 680 are going to be fine with 70+fps anywhere.

My buddy has been just gushing about the game.  I've never been into MMOs, but I kind of want to own one just so I have one, and since there is no pay-2-play, this one might be ok.

                Thoughts?

A friend of mine on the beta said the game was smooth.  There wasn't any video or isp lag.  I think she's rockin a P67T board with a 400 series nvida graphics card.  She mention she had max graphics settings at 1080 reso.  I'm guessing her minimum fps never dipped below 30 fps.  She's probably not even rocking the latest Nvidia driver...

This can be applied rather sadly to SWTOR. If I had known the beta events were a way to market a lackluster MMO I would never of gone for SWTOR. I plan on getting GW2 when it releases though.

Excellent!  Its about damn time a developer had the balls to redefine how an MMO is played, and also not charge a monthly fee!  I didn't level too far as I really just wanted to try out each class and the 3 available races thus far.  The Sylvari and Asura are what I'm most excited to play as.{were locked in this beta}  Warrior was the most fun for me, as I really enjoyed getting toe-to-toe with mobs and having total control over dodging their abilities and spells, arrows, etc.  Nothing has a homing feature, so if you watch for the enemies tells you can dodge just about everything, though you have to be careful not to run out of stamina.

Not having quest hubs was awesome, just wandering around and oh look that looks fun or that NPC needs help.  The dynamic events are usually lengthy and have multiple stages and activities of participation, for instance if you don't want to fight mobs or they're being killed too fast, you can do collection, or feed animals and whatnot.  One thing I really loved about the combat was that it wasn't a jump in and destroy everything in a few secs.  Most mobs I encountered put up a fight and did quite a bit of damage to me, you had to heal and dodge and use all your abilities to stay alive, especially when you pulled or linked several enemies.  Also being able to join in on any battle or have others help you without being penalized was great, and everyone gets rewarded in the end.

One other feature I really enjoyed was the Karma system, for completing dynamic events or helping NPCs.  Granted I didn't find anything spectacular to spend the few Karma I did earn, but I was only lvl 3 too, but every dynamic event had a Karma vendor NPC with various goods to purchase.

Anyway, I could keep going, but if ya can't tell already, GW2 is spectacular!
