Is this a new trend? Tuesday, March 13, 2012 9:46 AM (permalink)
Highly anticipated games being pooped on, especially sequels
Duke'Em was in development for over a decade and when it was finally released it was total crap
Batman: AC was riddled with problems concerning DX11 and felt way too short
Skyrim was felt far less epic than Oblivion, it used dated DX9, riddled with problems from day one

And Mass Effect 3 has just been released with a half-ass story on dated software

I'm hearing about how consoles are killing PC gaming but it seems more like devs are killing gaming  period

there is nothing new of this.  the quality of games has gotten progressively worse over the years.  mostly due to poor QC and the dev's being rushed to market by the publishers.

That along with the fact the expectations have been getting higher and higher as time has gone on over the years.

All the games listed were great (except Duke Nukem).  Yeah, there are some bad things or bugs in them, but their FAAAAR from being "total crap" imo.

When something in entertainment is seen to make a lot of money, the guys wearing suits beat it to death in order to wring every last penny they can from it before telling us what we're supposed to like next.

Look at movies and music, same deal there.  games are the next big thing they can exploit for maximum profit before the bubble bursts.

I would gladly take a game that was dx 9 and had a tad less eye candy if it was long with a good story. I like games like Call of Duty, battlefield and such but how many times do I have to jump from a ledge/helicopter/bridge and grab someones hand to save me or have a slow mo scene where I am half dead but have to kill a bad guy with a pistol. A lot of re-hashed crap. Even the sci fi games I play are re-hashed. Same weapons or time slowing/stopping device. Even the enemies are all the same. I think that's why I enjoyed Portal so much. Totally different and fun with zero cursing and violence or nudity.

Yeah this is definitely a trend.  Many series are ruined.  Games are rushed now since they are just patched later, therefore devs tend to not care how buggy they are (especially mainstream devs).  DX9 isn't a problem though - the games that use DX10 and DX11 only have a few last minute DX10/DX11 effects that make almost no difference.  Look at The Witcher 2 - a DX9 game and one of the very best looking games out there.

I definitely agree about devs killing gaming in general.  This isn't only because of bugs though, but because they are catering to the majority of gamers who are just kids and only want to shoot things.  They don't want things that challenge them or things like storylines or character development which may require thought.  So things like these are absent from most games.

The most popular games are non-challenging, extremely generic, repetitive, and re-hashed children's shooters that re-use the same (terrible) formula over and over again.  Call of Duty and Battlefield are great examples.  Twitch shooters are fine if they're competitive, which these and most others aren't.  Because of their popularity, other devs try to make all of their games like this even if they aren't first person shooters.  Horror games have been replaced with repetitive generic shooters (Resident Evil 4/5, Dead Space series, F.E.A.R.), brawlers/fighting games have turned into button mashers like Batman, etc.

Some indy developers still produce quality games, and every now and then some mainstream games turn out to be great.  But most games are just child's play these days and it's rare to come across something that stands out.

Just a heads up, as people get older - their ways get more and more set. New games cater to newer generations, just like music does. Don't be surprised if games seem to get worse as time goes on.
