yea?  I ordered the exact screw that G put down on the plans...

OH CR@P... I got the 6-32 ones then?!  I forgot we changed it to M3?!  argh! 

What was the screw part # from McMaster?  The original spec was 1.125" which I can go under being 25mm, or over being 30mm.  I like getting longer screws, and just grind off what gets in the way. 

Here is what I found:

M3—Pitch: 0.5 mm

Type 316 Stainless Steel—DIN

M3—Pitch: 0.5 mm

the 30mm would be better, the 30mm ends 1/16th under the stock sr2 backplate when tightened down.. I did pm you the part #, lol

I don't think it will matter in the least.  It would look SEXY AS HELL to have a mirror finish on all that copper though.

There were so many to search through I just ordered both anyway. 

Yeah I got the 30mm ones, and if you PM'd me, I might have lost it in the sea of messages that I had.  Sad part is that I have been looking to order new PSU wires from McMaster to cut to length and I was not even thinking of just making one big order instead of the 3 in succession.  They are probably going to think I am some crazy guy that will order one or two things at a time.

I'm not 100% sure it will fit on a micro. nate may have a micro to test fit it on, but i designed it for the sr-2. looks like it will fit, but better check 1st.

BTW, both of Grat's DD blocks are cut.  Now to drill, tap, and finish them.

we are working on an update for this. should be really cool. going to integrate a bridge to v-reg and changing the bottom to the new dd m6! performance will be upgraded dramatically. prob 7 degrees or so. pics soon

I admit that I have not read through this thread -- so maybe it was already answered.  Why is the input fitting not centered over the impingement pins like the original design used?

it was designed to allow ANY compression fitting to work, which is not the case for the original top. also I noticed no diferance in temps due to not having it centered. the flow still is directed through all the pins. when you actually get down to the physics on the issue, once the loop stabalizes in temp, it is really only pressure and surface area and flow rate that matter on the fluid flow side of things. where it could use improvement is in the actual base design. this is not the top performing block. it works as good as it originally did if not slightly better but it looks a heck of a lot better and matches the copper look. we are working on a top for the newer dd block which was tested to work as well as the top blocks from ek and others by independant testing. I didnt actually run any hydrodynamic solid works analisis because this is not really meant for mass production. I would bet that when I pulled it slightly off center, it decreased the dead spot and actually increased flow through the surface area. when and if I design an entire base block I would certainly do all of that, but at this point why re-invent the wheel.
 
I designed this top to use bases I already had in posession and use them on my sr-2 for folding 24/7 with my x5672 chips. what makes the most differance in temps is having enough flow rate and enough radiator to cool the water. it has no problem pulling the heat from the chip to water. if a 3-4 degree diferance is important to you then the new design we are working on with the new basses will do that. but you have to pull the heat from the water properly by having enough rad to do that with any block.

Yes, I agree for the most part.  I can't really argue without actually bench testing the block, but I was wondering if the placement on the outside edge would cause the majority of the flow to favor going out the side and around the impingement pins instead of flowing through the pins.  Sure surface area matters, but if the greater part flows around the outside to avoid the section of high surface area, you see that it might negatively affect cooling.

you can see what happens when the flow is centered like the original top. i think having it offset reduces the deadspot. but it really doesnt matter what I think, it does the job and compressions fit:) if I get some time I will model it for you.
 
really as long as water can't stagnate in the hot center area then you are good. I can't see how water would stagnent there unless you had really low flow.

In the top half of that quick drawing, I am showing how I figure the flow is going through the block currently.  I figure the area in red is getting little amount of the fluid flow and the majority of the flow is going around the outside.  In the bottom half of that drawing, I propose that you add a step on each side of the outside of the circumference to force the fluid to flow through all the impingement pins and better absorb the heat.  Of course the 'steps' / 'baffles' (whatever you want to call them) wouldn't be as dramatic as in that drawing.

yah, thanks for the visual. what you suggest might make a real minor differance. tbh though I am done with this top and moving my design ideas to a newer base with more potencial for heat removal.

this top/base worked fine but i think the new system I am working on will work better especialy as we go to 8 and 10 core xeons later this year.
this top was designed to allow compressions to fit and visual improvemnets. as long as it worked thrermaly as good as the old top, which it does I was happy with it.
 
nate may want to experiment a little idk, but for me its not worth the time on the old base when I have a new one to design for.
 
 
oh, and btw the whole reason I added the extrusion to the inside of the top was to allow for jet plates to experiment with. I didnt ever have the time to make any though and based on the performance I didnt feel the need to.

btw. thank you for the input. I value that and it makes me realize I need to do the thermodynamic analisis on the next one to verify what is happening. thanks man.

Sad, I think I may have just made the last 2 of these blocks.  I think the places I get them from have sold out.  Don't see DD making anymore of these.
