(ZBeast)

I'm happy with mine I recently purchased a few weeks ago. Single monitor setup. No heavy gaming (at least atm) Only WoW and D3. Just wanted to build a new system and the price-performance ratio was too good to pass up. Card idles around 36-40C and in D3 highest I've seen it is 72C but its max celcius rating is 105C. Attached screenshot from logitechG15 with card at idle, sorry its small.

Re:GTX 480, are these still solid cards? (RainStryke)

GTX 480 being loud in your case usually equals bad cable management or picking out a half way decent case that has good airflow. Bad airflow/cable management will make the fan have to work harder.

The best OEM cooler for the GTX 480 was the ThermalRight Shaman, but they've been nearly impossible to find for years now.
Re:GTX 480, are these still solid cards? (ransan309)

You definitely want to set up a custom fan profile for the 480`s. I only had them on air for about 3 months, but as I recall.... Before putting waterblocks on my 480`s. My temps. in games like Metro 2033 and Battlefield 2 were typically in the low 80C range. I would think you could get good results with your HafX case. I have had my cards for nearly 2 years now and have been extremely pleased with there performance.
I realize you have no intentions of W/C but they do love being under water.
As others have said. They do use a lot of juice and can get hot and loud on air.
Also; I (as well as many others) have had problems with stable drivers. I am currently running the 296.10 without to many issues. Before that the only driver that performed well was the 266.58. Something to be aware of

Re:GTX 480, are these still solid cards? (raminux)

I wonder if GTX 480 is particularly unique to be asked about here? I just acquired one and have not had much chance to exploit it yet but I find its stock cooler being loud. I am looking for a replacement now.
Re:GTX 480, are these still solid cards? It also helps that I spent a little more on my case fans and got some super quiet ones. My temps never really pass 80C. You can see the way I have it set-up in my mod rigs.

are you using stock fan profile? or custom? what is the fan % at the temps you're at?

also I would like to know what games these are recorded at...sorry for all the questions Rainstryke...it's just I need to gauge a "real world" scenario....I don't want something like, "My temps never really pass 80C...this is with 100% fan speed and playing in Minecraft" or something like that...lol

40C during idol, 77C during load, playing COD:BO for about 45 minutes.
Re:GTX 480, are these still solid cards? (dukenuke88)

thanks Mr Creeper for an honest answer

I don't plan on keeping them forever...right now, my current eye is on the GK110 non reference card...like an MSI Lightning version or EVGA classified....lets say the reference GK110 is releasing by end of this year....then custom cards should drop 3-4 months after that...so lets just say, around Q1 2013, I will retire my 480's and move onto something else...thats assuming I buy them

And I won't be using dual monitors, just single....also how hot is too hot for these cards? I "heard" they were designed to run at really high temps, and it doesn't bother them one bit....I know alot of people out there say "yeah I like to keep mine below xx Celcius", or whatever...but thats all personal preference...are these 480s really designed to run near 100c and not show any signs of slow down?
Re:GTX 480, are these still solid cards? (VegetaCreeper)

They are hot and loud... They are tremendous performers. Price per performance ratio is amazing. However - they do gobble up electricity. In the long run you will spend lots of money to power these. Also (the reason I RMA'd mine), if you use dual monitors the cards don't downclock properly and idle at temps up to 79 degrees celcius. That is just simply hot!

Yes you can probably get the cards to stock gtx 580 - but I think you have to OC a little higher than 772 and 2004...

My quick 2 cents
GTX 480, are these still solid cards? (dukenuke88)

Okay so about a month and half ago...GTX 480's came popping up at retailers like Amazon and Newegg...except with the KR suffix at the end...in other words, 3 year warranty instead of the lifetime....but they are pretty much the same card as far as I could tell...they are priced very attractively at $209 shipped

Do you guys think two 480's in SLI still packs a solid punch in today's world? $420 shipped for two high end cards sound tempting...but the problem is, the heat and the noise

Now I do have a HAF X case with extra fans all around...If I do get the 480's, I plan to keep them stock, no WC involved...have the 480's been revised to run cooler and more efficient than before? Also another question, does a 480 at 772 core and 2004 memory = stock 580?

Any info on this subject would be greatly appreciated...I have no experience with the 480...I just heard it was loud and hot and generally not worth it at full price :(
